Do Boycotts really work?

Boycotts have grown in popularity and emerged as the preferred tool by Muslims to make their feelings known about oppression of the Muslims globally. 

 With seemingly endless list of companies, movies, events etc being added daily, one must ask---

What separates the effective boycott from the futile one from an Islamic perspective?
