Why is Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa so important in Islam?

Allah states in Surah Al-Isra:

"Glory be to the One Who took His servant by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing." (Quran 17:1)

This verse alone establishes the sanctity, blessing, and immense importance of Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa and its surroundings in Bilad Al-Sham (Greater Syria, including Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria).
